We have been playing songs for a looong time, and many have been considered, but here are just a few of my front-runner picks:

This is still my number 1 pick, I think this would be HILARIOUS to walk up to bat, pointing to the outfield to signal your impending home run...

If you read my post from yesterday, you may have gathered that I was all sorts of cranky, anxious, and just pretty down-in-the-dumps about job-searching and being unemployed with lots of student loans and bills weighing on my little shoulders like a thousand pound bag of potato chips...(yum!).

WELL, interestingly enough, today while I was being all kinds of cranky riding my bike from South Philly up to my house, (it is so damn hot today, and no bike lanes in Old City can make a girl a little cranky!), I heard my cell phone ring in my bag. I didn't think too much of it because I was cranky and riding my bike. BUT, when I finally did get home and checked my voicemail....I found out that I got the job I wanted!!!!

Now it's time to do a dance.

We gonna sip some champagne tonight oh yeah!

The events of today (or lack-thereof...) can sum up how things have been going for me lately. Here is a cryptic list of somewhat interconnected happenings in an attempt to sum it up:

1) Although I know I was working furiously all day, multitasking about a million things with no breaks...I can't really tell you what I did today.

2) One thing I CAN tell you is that I spent about two hours on the application for ONE website (that shall remain nameless) and still didn't finish...

3) Realized at 4pm that all I had eaten was a piece of toast :(

4) Attempted to write a coherent and serious essay on SQUIRRELS for my online Biology class.

Yup. Life is good.

Here are some new musical faves that I've stumbled across during my unemployed/unstudent status....um I mean, 'new grad' status (...dang, I need to git a job).

Ahem.

1. Coma Cinema:

I listened to this band's album last night (called, 'Stoned Alone'...haha!) whilst cleaning up after dinner and all I can say is that dishwashing has never been so fun.

2. Mermaids:

When I came across this particular band I got real excited because for a second I thought they might be Katie Sketch's rumored (and I think now dead) post-Organ project, which was titled, 'Mermaids' as well. For the first few seconds of the first song I heard I was a bit disappointed and a tad grumpy...until those sweet, sweet, surfy-garage-inspired guitar notes jangled on through my ears. I couldn't help tapping my foot along, and now I'm hooked. This band hails from Atlanta, GA. I also love finding a good video of an amazing live performance, and these guys definitely nailed it!

3. Purity Ring:

I am actually surprised by how much I really like this single from Purity Ring, as I normally don't really get down with this genre of music. But this is super sick and I'll prolly be cranking this while driving (GTA-IV style?) through the streets of Philly. Also, I am pretty sure a fan put this video together, but this old movie kinda reminds me of Kill Bill and there's sweet 70's dresses in it, (plus eye-patches!), so that's an added bonus.

PS. My funemployment status has resurrected my video-gaming tendencies and I blasted the dust off my XBOX 360 the other day...get ready for some GTA-IV references...(since I can't afford any new games!) : (

...with a dreamy girl band that is NOT School of Seven Bells, (My sister and her boyfriend Chip also said they were super disappointing when they saw them at Johnny Brenda's awhile ago...bummerz).

Warpaint has been around for quite awhile (they started in 2004, but I think started to get more attention/released their ep in 2007/2008-ish?), but like I've said before, I am often the last one to find out about things in general. In any case, I am excited to have found a "new" (for me) band that I really like a lot.

In other news, I passed comps! Now all that is left to do is pass praxis, make my resume (HELP!?), and the small matter of actually finding a decent CFY position somewhere close to Philadelphia...preferably (and hopefully) with adults.

Whilst on a (somewhat random) search for songs from the classic 90's music compliation disc, PULSE, (which Meghan, Kate, and I tried desperately to play at various New Brunswick parties when we were wee highschool raggamuffins...unfortunately for us the hipsters always managed to shut it down!), I found this little gem of a video, which I am using as inspiration for my upcoming Halloween party this Saturday night!

I can only hope my party will be as good as what you witnessed in that video...

After watching that particular video, I was reminded of one of my favorite Parker Posey movies, Party Girl, about a flaky screw-up party girl who attempts to become a librarian (...uh, I MIGHT have considered becoming a librarian in a certain somewhat shaky time during my early college years).

The Halloween/costume party dance scene I found from Party Girl is not for the faint of heart, and definitely a little weird, so watch out:

*Note: my plan for my party is more on the Martha Stewart end of the party spectrum, and is shaping out to be more cutesy (think: muddled cider, ghost petite fours, and pumpkin puff pastries), than the crazy altered-state-of-mind dance parties shown above. The worst that could happen at my party is for someone to drink too much cider and (GOD FORBID!) break my pool cue. This is just for clarification so anyone (i.e., the 3 people that read this blog) don't mistake me for some drug-crazed party-person.

Retrace Your Steps!

Yesterday started off in disaster: First, I saw a small alien in my basement...an ominous and disturbing sign for the day to come, to say the least.

"EEK!"

Following the alien encounter, I decided to run a few quick errands around the neighborhood before going to Temple to give voice therapy. I went to the fancy catfood store in my neighborhood to get the yittens some snacks. It was...CLOSED! Rats. Then I got some coffee beans, and then finally a big delicious bottle of over-priced water at the convenience store. I strolled home in a daze, admiring the beautiful fall weather!

To make a long story short, I begrudgingly got into the car to go to Temple for voice clinic. Of course there is no (free) parking, so when I got to the lot I realized I had forgotten my wallet.

"D'OH!" I thought.

Upon returning home, I ripped through my house like a small and semi-violent tornado, screamed at the cat, and wept a bit. Then I decided to RETRACE MY STEPS. So I went back to the convienence story. The Mama Fratelli look-a-like told me she hadn't seen my wallet...

"...now GIT OUTTA MY STORE!"

Hopeless and pathetic, I left the store on the verge of tears and insanity. How would I get to Temple without any money for parking/public transportation? I was all in a tizzy, when I spied a pinkish blob in the middle of the street, (which reminded me, I really need to get my dang eyes checked), I ran up to the blob, and what did I find you ask....?

MY WALLET! With all my credit cards, license, CASH MONEY, still intact and snug as a bug in their proper pockets!

I know what you must be thinking..."You Lucky Bastage." And I did feel like one lucky bastage yesterday, I'll tell you whhhut. My difficult client was also very pleasant, and the other one canceled, thus all-in-all, the disastrous day turned out okay.

The moral of the story:

a. Retrace your steps!

and

b. Try not to be a flaky idiot in the first place

Eating Her Fingers Like It Was Just Another Meal

Summer is winding down. I have one final project left to write, and one more day of clinic left. This summer has been rare in that it has been a truly pleasant and relatively stress-free semester. I finally made it to the nj shore and swam in the ocean. I just got my hospital placement for the fall, which I am both excited and a little nervous about (but in a good way). Adrian is moving in soon, and things are good. We are even thinking about getting Stevie a little girlfriend, (emphasis on the word, 'little,' as she is five weeks old and so tiny she can literally fit in the palm of my hand!). She is already a little play-monster and Stevie seems to like her, or at least be interested in her, so I think it will work out nicely.

Oh summer, I shall miss thee! I wish I had a bit longer time to do all the fun summer activities that I didn't do these past three months. Oh well, better make this a good one!

...about my music mix, that is. Yes, I have made a Summer 2010 Mix CD! I know, I am crazy about the mixes this year, but it is a more engaging evening-activity than watching old episodes of Arrested Development on Netflix.

Alas, I have tried in vain, (IN VAIN, I TELL YOU!) to upload the cover art for my cd, but the computer gods have waged an unholy war against me, and I fear I may smash my sister's scanner/computer if I take this any further (thus, resulting in her smashing my face). Maybe when I am feeling less murderous/head-achey I will attempt to successfully upload it.

Anyways, I have tried to make this summer mix sound as similarly dreamy-sweet as these next two songs (both bands featured on the mix):

I was listening to the radio this morning and they were interviewing Tony Coleman, the director of a new documentary that's all about the ukulele. And he said something very sweet and sad that I could appreciate:

And that is what I usually am thinking of/referring to when I talk about a special treat...but surprisingly, the particular special treat that I just experienced is NOT dessert/food related (Huh?).

I just had the pleasure of riding my bike down to the Physick House on 4th St and saw Josephine Foster play in a very intimate little show. I think this is the room we were in:

I will say that 90% of the show was very magical and special, but some strange things happened, that's for sure. I am too tired to get into the details right now, so maybe I will save them for another day.

Everything about Josephine Foster makes her seem as if she is not from this time. This makes sense in my brain but I'm too sleepy to explain. And that's another small annoyance I have about going to shows...the opening bands can be great and all (and the first opening musician was really great...the second? That's another story...), but I am SO DAMN SLEEPY by the time the person who I actually came to see comes on to play. I get the dreaded Dan-Sleepy-Eye (which for people who are unfamiliar is when I literally cannot hold my eyelids open without exerting an extreme amount of effort...and I usually fail miserably when I try to resist it).

Anyways, Josephine Foster is very lovely and when she was playing the harp tonight I was all, Huh, is this what heaven is like? The point is she sounded very angelic. And she sorta looks like she could have been on Anne of Green Gables. This is meant in the nicest way possible but I just gotta throw it out there.

1. Forgot to eat breakfast this morning (note to self: bad idea)
2. Unknowingly wrote down wrong street name for address to headstart preschool (supposed to be there at 9:00 for conditioned play audiometry...thingy)
3. ...and thus, had a mini-breakdown when I got lost and showed up 15 mins late.
4. Only had a few minutes to grab something to eat after audiometry thing/before class. Got a water and Snickers bar to eat during class and...
5. ...forgot about girl with peanut allergy in said class.

I WAS SO HUNGRY!

Phew. At least it is almost bedtime.

Today I witnessed an arrest by the side of Rt. 287 in the fine state of Central New Jersey. Exciting stuff, I know. But the real life lesson here was that I realized that I was actually feeling really bad for the khaki-panted criminal getting handcuffed next to exit 10. Oh exit 10, such memories...Anyways, I wondered if it was weird that I was feeling bad for him, instead of being all, "Good job fellas, another baddie off the streets!" I mean, in all seriousness, this guy could have been a pretty bad dude.

Maybe my 80's cartoon upbringing is to blame for this tendency to sympathize with the bad guy...after all, the main characters in my favorite shows were trouble-making cats, mostly.

And in my wee years as a young raggamuffin, I also may have had a crush on the bad kid from the Care Bears movie...I won't deny it!

Oh Lifetime.

How I love thee.

Today I made the jarring discovery that Hulu now features several Lifetime Original Movies that change-up each week. Holy Oreos! It was like I stepped into a magical time-machine that warped me back to 7th grade, lounging gracefully on my living room couch, stuffing Pringles into my mouth by the can and settling in for a perfectly disturbing Lifetime Original Movie about a nosey housewife turned crime-fighting detective...Or, my personal favorite, (and we had it on vhs, too!), the anorexic gymnast who hides her pizza in a potted plant. (*As a side note, this always puzzled me...the only thing I threw in there were my Flinestone vitamins. And they tasted like barf...just sayin')

Is there anything more unintentionally awkward and hilarious than the 'sexy music' in a Lifetime Original movie? I think not. It's just pure genius!

And today I had the pleasure of viewing, 'The Party Never Stops,' which taught me some valuable coming-of-age lessons about the dangers of teenage partying.

Here's a list of some other things that I got done today, just in case you think I'm slacking:

1. Filled out my Fafsa
2. Finished putting together my Powerpoint presentation on Conversational Turn-Taking in Fluent Aphasia (!)
3. Prepared all my therapy materials and outlines for Thursday
4. Cooked a healthy, delicious, and well-balanced dinner of sauteed kale, honey browned carrots, and bbq chicken (Shan did the chicken)
5. Went to the gym
6. And some other stuff

Now Stevie and I are going to have a staring contest, in which the winner will get to have a spoonful of yogurt.

PS. If only Hulu could get Unsolved Mysteries on there...now that'd be something...

The last I heard of Jessica Toth was that she was separated from (former?) husband, James Jackson Toth of the band, Wooden Wand, (now just 'Wand,' I believe). I really don't keep too up-to-date on music-related news or projects, so I have no idea if she is still making music or involved in any kind of new projects.

Part of the reason why I loved Wand's older stuff (and as a quick side note, it feels weird to refer to him as 'Wand,' because I really was only into 'Wooden Wand' and haven't heard any of his newer stuff...anyway!), was due to Jessica's beautiful voice and incredible vocal harmonies. I wonder if she is involved in any other musical projects...?

In other news, it turns out that I am a terrible wheelchair driver. I also get to pick up Adrian from the airport tonight. Oh happy day!

Spring Music Mixes (And Other Non-Sequiturs)

Spring-time music mixes are a lovely thing, I do believe.

And trying to make the perfect one is so much fun and a *bit* of a challenge, (as well as an aid in my ongoing quest to procrastinate as much as possible). It's a challenge because, (in my opinion), a good Spring Mix should encapsulate that kind of day-dreamy, light, and excited anticipation of warmer weather and sunshine in approximately 20 well-sequenced songs. And at the same time, (and I think I *try* to do this with all mixes I make), I want the songs, (and the mix as a whole), to have that ineffable nostalgic, epic, or stirring quality to it as well, (Damn my emo musical-upbringings!)...This can be a little tricky and time-consuming, to say the least.

And then there's the issue of the artwork...I don't know what I like better: creating the mix, or then listening to the whole thing while I draw an appropriately cute/strange, half grown-up/half child-like cartoon while listening to the mix in its entirety, (and sipping on a glass of wine/beer, of course). So Much Fun.

Last year I made a Summer mix that I was very proud of, (and I know of at least two people who really enjoyed it as well!). I think that this year my Spring Mix will be as equally beautiful and exciting to listen to, if not more so (here's hopin'). I only have 11 songs so far, and not in a set-in-stone order, but on the whole, they are very pretty and whimsical tunes that I *think* go together quite nicely and provide a balanced overall sound.
